A Very Warm Welcome to Year 3

Welcome to our Year Three information page. Over the year, we will update this page with important information, knowledge organisers, timetables and calendars to support your child's progress.

We are really looking forward to working with you and your children, as your support makes all the difference.

SUMMER 2

Our topic question is: What are the secret lives of plants?

This term our learning will connect Science, Geography and English through exciting opportunities for exploration, discussion and discovery.

In Science, Year 3 pupils will explore the fascinating world of plants and begin to understand the relationship between structure and function – discovering that every part of a plant has an important job to do. Children will investigate how roots and stems help plants with nutrition and support, how leaves contribute to making food, and how flowers play a role in reproduction. Pupils will also be introduced to the idea that plants can make their own food, although they will not yet explore the scientific process behind this.

In Geography, pupils will develop their understanding of physical geography, learning about climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts and exploring how environments vary across the world.

Our English and wider curriculum project will be linked to our class text, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Through this exciting story, pupils will explore themes around where chocolate comes from and begin to learn about Fairtrade chocolate, considering how cocoa is grown and how choices can support farmers and communities around the world.

To bring our learning to life, we are excited to visit Sheffield Botanical Gardens, where children will have opportunities to observe a wide variety of plants, explore different environments, and make real-world connections to their classroom learning through enquiry and discovery.

How you can help at home:

  • Explore plants together – look at plants in your garden, local park or neighbourhood and talk about the different parts of a plant and what their jobs might be.
  • Read and discuss together – enjoy Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at home and talk about where ingredients such as cocoa might come from and how products reach us.
  • Encourage curiosity about the wider world – look at maps, atlases or documentaries and discuss how climate and environment influence what grows in different places.

Outdoor Learning and PE Dates

KEY DATES

Knowledge organisers for this half term

PE and Outdoor Learning

In the Summer term, PE takes place on a Tuesday afternoon and alternative Wednesday mornings.

PE kits consist of PLAIN black shorts or jogging bottoms, HIVE T-SHIRTS, and trainers.

This year, children will need to bring in their named PE kit and this can be kept in school until half term when it will be sent home.

Children will also need to bring their Outdoor Learning kit on Wednesday mornings (see the timetable  above) and this will then go home for washing after every session.

Homework in Year 3

Each week, we ask that all children read with somebody at home at least three times a week. This could be any adult or an older sibling or friend. Please sign their diary and add a comment. Every little bit of reading really does help children on the learning journey.

We also ask that the children practise their weekly spellings which can be found stuck in communication diaries. We conduct a spelling quiz each week as part of a dictation lesson, and these words form part of our English teaching for the week.

A vital aspect of Maths is that the children have a secure recall of times tables so we ask that they spend some time each week on TT Rockstars practising these.

Also, in the Summer Term we will be continuing the use of Homework books. The homework will be set on a Friday and will need to be returned by Wednesday.

If you have any questions please ask.
